Short answer

Trenchless sewer repair works well on round, passable pipe with roots, cracks or leaking joints, using a sectional liner for isolated faults or a full-length liner for faults along the line, or bursting for pipe too broken to line. It does not fix a belly or pass a collapse, which still need a dig at that spot. A recorded camera inspection decides which applies to your line.

Key takeaways
  • The camera decides the method; symptoms alone do not.
  • Sectional liners suit one or two faults; spread-out faults suit a full liner.
  • Bellies and collapses keep a dig on the plan, usually as a hybrid.
  • All prices here are CAD 2026 planning estimates, not quotes.

01 /About these answers

These are the questions homeowners most often ask about fixing a sewer line without trenching the yard, answered briefly. Each answer links to the guide that goes deeper. They are written for Calgary and the rest of Canada; local rules on permits and ownership vary, so confirm with your municipality.

FAQAll questions

Does trenchless sewer repair actually work?

Yes, when it matches the defect. Liners are widely used by municipalities, including Calgary's own lateral lining program, and on private laterals. Failures usually trace to poor preparation, a method chosen without camera footage, or a belly lined over. See how trenchless sewer repair works.

Is trenchless repair the same thing as trenchless replacement?

Repair usually means renewing the existing pipe from inside with a liner, or sealing joints. Replacement usually means bursting, which puts new pipe along the old path. Both avoid a full trench.

Can a single crack be fixed without lining the whole pipe?

Often, with a sectional liner, if the rest of the pipe is sound. The Spot Repair or Full Liner? planner compares the two plans for your defects.

When is a full liner better value than spot repairs?

When there are three or more separate faults, or when the pipe is old clay, concrete or cast iron with more than one fault, because the other joints share the same weakness. See sewer spot repair.

Can trenchless methods fix a sagging sewer pipe?

Not on their own. Liners and bursting follow the existing grade, so the sag stays. The low section is dug and relaid, and the rest can be lined. See trenchless sewer belly repair.

What if the camera cannot get past a blockage?

Clear the blockage and try again. If it is a severe offset or collapse, the pipe usually needs exposing at that point, and no liner can be installed past it until then.

Is my old clay sewer a good candidate for lining?

Clay is one of the most commonly lined materials, provided it is still round and passable and roots are cut out first. Broken clay on a straight run may suit bursting instead.

Can Orangeburg sewer pipe be repaired without digging?

Sometimes by bursting, which crushes fibre pipe. Lining needs a round host, and fibre pipe that has flattened may not give one. See trenchless repair by pipe material.

Do I need a cleanout for trenchless repair?

A liner needs a way in. An existing cleanout is the usual access; without one, a cleanout is added or an access pit dug, which adds cost.

How many holes will be dug in my yard?

For lining from a cleanout, often none. For bursting, at least two, plus any at connections or sharp bends. A hybrid adds one at the belly or collapse.

Are branch connections a weak point after lining?

They can be. Each covered connection must be reopened cleanly and sealed. See lateral reinstatement and connection seals.

What is chemical grouting used for in sewers?

Sealing leaking joints in pipe that is otherwise sound, one joint at a time, often alongside lining. It does not repair cracks or collapses. See sewer joint grouting.

Who pulls the permit for a trenchless sewer repair?

Usually the contractor, though in Calgary homeowners may apply for plumbing permits too. Whether one is needed depends on the municipality and scope; get the answer in the quote.

Do I need utility locates for a trenchless repair?

For any pit or dig, yes. In Alberta, Utility Safety Partners asks for requests at least three full working days ahead; it does not locate private sewer lines.

Can trenchless repair be done in January in Calgary?

Lining from a basement cleanout often can. Pits and digs are slower and dearer in frozen ground, and restoration may wait for spring.

Can I stay home during a lining job?

Usually, but you cannot use the drains while the pipe is worked on and the liner cures. Ask about resin odours and ventilation.

What should the final video show after a trenchless repair?

A smooth liner or new pipe from end to end, ends where the quote said, every connection reopened, and no leaks or unexpected standing water. See problems with trenchless sewer repair.

What is a reasonable price range for a spot liner?

As a 2026 planning estimate, $2,500 to $6,500 for the first section and $1,500 to $3,500 for each extra one on the same visit. See the cost page.

Why do two trenchless quotes for the same line differ so much?

Access, cleaning effort, liner system, number of connections and restoration differ. Give every contractor the same footage and compare line by line.

Will homeowner insurance pay for trenchless sewer repair?

It depends entirely on your policy and the cause of the damage. Many policies treat wear, roots and deterioration differently from sudden events; ask your insurer or broker before work starts.

Does a lined sewer affect selling my house?

Buyers and their inspectors usually want to see the final video and warranty. Keep them with the house records; a documented repair is easier to explain than an undocumented one.

How soon can drains be used after lining?

When the cure is complete and the connections are reopened. The installer will tell you; for a typical house lateral it is usually the same day.

Can a lined pipe be lined again in future?

Sometimes, depending on the remaining diameter and condition. It is another reason to keep the final video, so a future contractor knows what is in the ground.

Is DIY trenchless sewer repair possible?

Not safely or compliantly for most homeowners. It needs specialist equipment, sewer gas and confined-space precautions, and in many municipalities a permit and inspection.
